1. SIMPSON Cleaning MSH3125-S – Best Performing Home Pressure Washer
If you are looking for a company that specializes in home pressure washers, ensuring that they provide you with the best experience, there are few companies out there that can keep up with Simpson Cleaning.
Though it is not necessarily the most storied and nor has it been in the specialized market as long as some of the others–though it does have over 50 years of experience– but Simpson Cleaning has made it a point to provide some of the best targeted home power washers on the market. As such, it should come as little surprise that we rank it the Editor’s Choice Best Performing home pressure washer.
When it comes to purchasing a home pressure washer to last, the SIMPSON Cleaning MSH3125-S is easily one of the most durable home pressure washers that we saw. On the outside, the SIMPSON Cleaning MSH3125-S is mounted to a heavy-duty welded steel frame. This frame is then mounted onto 10” premium wheels. This arrangement alone ensures that the SIMPSON Cleaning MSH3125-S is ready for travel, but even the components are more durable than most too. The engine is a Honda GC190 cc engine with 5.2 hp while the pump features an axial cam design and is fitted with aluminum components of its own.
2. Sun Joe SPX3000 – Best All-Around Value Home Pressure Washer
Though it is a fairly young company at just over a decade old, Sun Joe’s original company, Snow Joe, made a splash in the outdoor maintenance market by providing a near commercial-grade product at consumer-grade prices.
Since that time, they have expanded to include products for virtually every consumer outdoor maintenance task. While this does mean they do not specialize in home power washers, Sun Joe does have a strong track-record in the outdoor maintenance market.
Another quality that is mostly a major plus for the Sun Joe SPX3000 is durability where the fact that it has a plastic body does little to slow this home pressure washer down. This is likely due in a large part to the 14.5 amp motor is the most powerful that we saw, but the Sun Joe SPX3000 also knows that the pump can be another point of issue for home pressure washers. That is why this home pressure washer has the Total Stop System which shuts off the pump when you are not holding down the trigger. Not only will this extend the life of your Sun Joe SPX3000 pump, but it will also reduce the amount of electricity that this home pressure washer uses.
3. Greenworks GPW1501 – Best Price Budget Home pressure washer
Greenworks is definitely a different kind of company on our list in that its focus is not on a task or market, like cleaning or home pressure washers. Instead, Greenworks is more interested in providing high end electric and battery-powered power tools of all sort for homeowners. To be clear, Greenworks is not a brand designed for heavy-duty or commercial applications.
That said, in terms of their specialty, you can rest assured that the Greenworks will at least last and perform adequately within its designated range.
Compared to the other products on our list, this is by far the least expensive that we saw that does not also sacrifice quality to the point of uselessness. While the Greenworks GPW1501 ultimately has the lowest cleaning power, it still has a spray power of 1500 psi and a water flow of 1.2 gpm–which is not too terribly far from the average. To increase the Greenworks GPW1501 overall value further, the brand uses universal connections, so you can use any accessories without having to worry about being forced to buy proprietary peripherals. The Greenworks GPW1501 even starts you off with 2 different nozzles, one to clean and one to apply soap or rise.
4. Karcher K5 Premium – Best Electric Home pressure washer
Out of all the companies on our list, none of them have as long nor storied of a history as Karcher which can trace its roots back over 80 years ago. Even better, this company has focused exclusively on cleaning products for the consumer, commercial, and even industrial markets for over 65 years.
That said, Karcher does not specialize exclusively in home pressure washers like some brands do. Still, as a leader in the cleaning devices market, Karcher knows what it takes to make the best of every type and category of cleaning equipment.
Whenever you are choosing an electric home pressure washer, it is important to realize that these products are not truly designed for commercial purposes or to clean the worst of messes. In that vein, electric home pressure washers are certainly a consumer-grade product which means they should have features geared towards the average user. One of the best features of the Karcher K5 Premium for this is its ergonomic design. For one, this home pressure washer has by far the largest wheels out of any electric pressure washer. On top of that, the wand for the Karcher K5 Premium features a large, full-hand trigger that makes using the Karcher K5 Premium for long periods of time less fatiguing.
5. Generac 6922 – Best Gas-Powered Home Pressure Washer
Generac is unlikely to be a brand that immediately springs to mind, but this company has actually developed a fairly good reputation in the almost 6 decades of experience since its founding. In fact, Generac was one of the first brands to offer a residential home pressure washer–though the company definitely does not specialize in power washers specifically or even cleaning equipment more broadly.
That said, if you are looking for a truly consumer-grade gas-powered home pressure washer, this is the best value we saw.
The Generac 6922 is, aside from one being of the most powerful home pressure washers on our list, it is also one of the most durable home pressure washers we reviewed too. For one, it features an impressive 5.2 hp engine that utilizes an OHV horizontal-shaft design, so the maintenance of the engine and the connections to the pump do not interfere with one another. The pump itself has an axial design and is able to generate more suction than most others. This is in part responsible for the impressive second-best 2.4 gpm water flow. The frame itself is made of metal and painted to help protect it from rust. The frame is mounted to 10” never-flat wheels to allow transport anywhere without worry.
Best home pressure washer – Buyer’s Guide
While there is technically an ultimate “cleaning power” rating for home pressure washers, that rating is unreliable and not what we are referring to when we consider the power of a home pressure washer. Here we are looking at how powerful either the engine or motor which ultimately does the work of the home pressure washer actually is. Keep in mind, this factor is far more relevant in terms of maximum capacity operation and long-term durability. Essentially, an engine or motor will last longer in general and be able to operate at its highest settings for longer without fail if they are more powerful. Granted, if the other components are not designed to operate at those settings that can cause it to fail as well. Regardless, this is one of the better predictors of a home power washer’s lifespan.
When it comes to fuel, home pressure washers can be powered either by gas or electricity. It is also worth noting that all gas-powered home pressure washers will also require oil and may even require that the oil be mixed with the gasoline–though that type of gas-powered home pressure washer almost always accepts pre-mixed gas. Still, electric power washers will cost less up front and less in the long run compared to gas-powered home pressure washers, so there is no point in expending the expense if you have no need to.
The main thing to remember is that gas-powered home pressure washers are almost without exception more powerful and durable than electric home pressure washers of the same grade. However, these home pressure washers are also significantly heavier such that without a good frame and set of wheels they become far too cumbersome to be functionally viable. Still, if you have commercial applications and simply wish to purchase a single home pressure washer that can do both, you likely should opt for a gas-powered home pressure washer.
This is one of the few products for which the materials, in general, are not necessarily the most important. The materials will place some pressure limits on the product which may skew it towards one market or another, but so long as you properly maintain the pressure washer, you will not have to worry too terribly much about the materials. The exceptions to that statement are limited to either the motor or the engine and the pump. That said, the materials used for commercial home pressure washers are distinctly better than the materials used for a consumer home pressure washer.
Plastic – There is no getting around the fact that plastic is a significantly weaker material to use than metal. The only reason that this material is not necessarily that big of a deal is because home pressure washers are rarely put in a position to have their external structural integrity tested. As such, using plastic for the body of a home pressure washer will make little difference aside from potentially limiting the maximum pressure–though the pump is far more likely to limit that than the body, and the pump in a consumer home pressure washer can be just as good as the pump used in a commercial home pressure washer. The only alternative to this dynamic is if the pressure washer is gas powered, in which case a metal frame, at least, is likely necessary for structural support.
Metal – Without a doubt, metal is a superior material for use with virtually every component on a home pressure washer outside of the hose in terms of durability when compared to plastic. That said, it is also a significantly more expensive material to use than plastic and is also much heavier. Thankfully, most home pressure washers that have metal bodies are also mounted on frames with large, heavy-duty wheels. This still can present some portability issues, so be sure to keep in mind that metal home pressure washers generally weigh at least twice as much as the heaviest electric power washer. Still, there is no substitute for substance, and metal will simply outlast and outperform plastic in pretty much every way–though it has a tendency to rust if not protected in some way and maintained.
As we can see, there are far too many possible applications or different appropriate settings for a single home pressure washer to be the best home pressure washer for all people. Instead, you will have to consider exactly how you plan to use your home pressure washer and figure out whether or not you truly need that heavy-duty, gas-powered home pressure washer or if an impressive electric home pressure washer will suffice.
